Dr. Gutierrez has always been a great resource for our student-athletes and to the sports medicine staff at CSUB. He has generously volunteered his time to do preseason preparticipation physicals which help ensures our student athlete are competing safely. He understands the mindset of a student-athlete and his care and treatment plan allows our student-athletes to compete safely at a high level. He has always shown a willingness to help others and works around the clock to help support his patients, especially the CSUB student-athletes. We are lucky to have him in our network of team physicians.

Dr. Gutierrez is a thoughtful and knowledgeable physician. He listens to his patients and treats the person, not just the symptoms. He has the ability to connect with athletes, both educating and treating them, which leads to better outcomes.

My name is Sarah Sands, I am a certified athletic trainer and a high school science teacher. I have known Dr. Gabriel Carpio since 2017 and have worked with him in a few different aspects. While working at Sports Conditioning and Rehabilitation (Tustin, CA), I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Carpio. Dr. Carpio was the team physician at Tustin High School, a school that our clinic worked closely with. We (our physical therapy team and I) would treat injured athletes and also worked closely with the athletic trainer at Tustin High School. During his time as the team physician for Tustin High School, Dr. Carpio and I would be in contact regarding the athletes he would send over for rehabilitation. We also recruited Dr. Carpio to assist with physicals at Canyon High School, which he did for about 5 years.

In 2018, I became the athletic trainer at Foothill High School and I recruited Dr. Carpio to be our team physician. He was then serving as the team physician for both Foothill and Tustin High School. Dr. Carpio made weekly visits to each campus where he assisted with injury evaluations, referrals, pre-participation physicals, concussion protocols, and much more. As an athletic trainer, having Dr. Carpio working with my athletes was truly amazing. His rapport with the athletes, staff, and parents was fantastic. Dr. Carpio was always willing to reach out to other physicians if needed, communicate with parents, and most importantly serve as a liaison for the athletic trainers in the community. He bridged the gap between high school sports and the medical community. Dr. Carpio understands the need for and lack of medical care in the local high schools.

His dedication to the youth athletes in our community has been admirable. Dr. Carpio volunteered much of his time to the local high schools in North Orange County by assisting with pre-participation physicals, being on the sideline at events, in the athletic training clinics, and seeing patients in his office. He is well respected in the area by medical professionals, athletic trainers, school administration and staff, and most of all his patients. I truly enjoyed working with Dr. Carpio and am very appreciative of the time he spent assisting the athletic trainers as well as treating his patients. I have always admired his dedication, commitment, and passion to help those in the community.

Dr. Carpio is not like every other primary care physician. Obviously he specializes in sports medicine but more than that as a person and professional he lives out the lost art, that is, connection and relationship. Whether it be with other physicians, patients, or more pertinent to myself, athletic trainers. My first interaction with him was more than a meet and greet. He had big plans to see communities transformed. He spoke to me about seeing sports medicine healthcare change in all communities not just the ones that could afford it. He knows and lives by the fact that he can do nothing with out the collaboration of other healthcare providers, like athletic trainers. Of course at first I thought this was all a bunch of fluff. But he proved me wrong. Every week he would come in to my school and take the time to see all the injuries and speak with all the parents. He would listen and make adjustments to feedback i would give him. He is the first team physician that I have worked with that doesn’t just do the bare minimum of the job but went far beyond in taking responsibility to provide the best care for my student athletes. He would sacrifice his time and energy like they were his own family.

Dr. Carpio through his character, passion, and genuine care became more than a great team physician he became a true friend. Anyone would be lucky to get to work with him.

As an athletic trainer, working alongside a doctor is part of the job. With no real legislation for athletic trainers in CA, it is so important to work with someone who is very knowledgeable within the world of sports. I was a head athletic trainer when I worked with Dr. Carpio, and it was truly a pleasure working with him. Dr. Carpio was awesome when it came to athletic trainer autonomy, he would always let me take the reigns while he was always there if I needed him. Not all doctors will support you the way Dr. Carpio does. Dr. Carpio made me feel so comfortable and allowed me to grow as an athletic trainer. I am now more confident thanks to his support and I have loved collaborating with him over the past few years. Any athletic trainer is lucky to work alongside Dr. Carpio and any athlete seen by Dr. Carpio is in good hands.

Dr. Carpio-Bracho and I worked together over the course of two years to develop a robust Sports Medicine program at Hoag Orthopedic Institute. He was instrumental in creating strong relationships with the athletic organizations in our community including high schools, colleges and athletic academies. Dr. Carpio-Bracho also played an active role in our Sports Medicine Committee, including volunteering to spearhead a concussion triage plan for community athletes. He partnered with coaches and athletic trainers to educate athletes on sports-related treatments and injury prevention. Dr. Carpio-Bracho’s commitment to improving hospital processes and decrease barriers to health care were invaluable the hospital, patients and the community he served.

MD CAQSM

Dr Gutierrez is a native of Dos Palos, a small farming town nestled along the westside of California’s Central Valley. He is a son of Mexican parents who immigrated to the United States in hopes of affording their children a better life. Growing up in an underserved community he quickly learned of the healthcare disparities affecting both his family and community. Seeing and experiencing the lack of resources motivated Dr. Gutierrez to pursue a profession that would allow him to give back to communities like the one in which he grew up. While in grade school he developed a passion for sports, a passion that he carries with him to this day. As a practicing physician he was able to couple his love for sports and his desire to provide access to healthcare in the areas that need it the most.

While completing his sports medicine fellowship training in El Paso, Dr. Gutierrez provided medical care to student athletes at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). Some of his duties included sideline/courtside coverage for all their Division I collegiate sports teams and assisting in their training room during the week. After fellowship, Dr Gutierrez spent some time in Bakersfield, CA where he was part of a primary care sports medicine practice. In Bakersfield, he volunteered his time with California State University Bakersfield Athletics where he worked closely with their athletic trainers to facilitate access to medical care and sports physicals.

Dr. Mario Gutiérrez is fluent in Spanish. During his free time Dr. Gutierrez enjoys spending time with his loved ones, working out, playing basketball and as a self-proclaimed foodie he loves cooking and eating delicious foods from different cultures.

Gabriel Carpio

Bracho, MD CAQSM

As a child, Dr. Carpio-Bracho immigrated with his family to the United States from Venezuela. The task of adapting to a new culture and language can feel daunting but the communities they found welcomed them and served to empower and guide them through the challenges of assimilation. Both of his parents are physicians and avid community advocates, exposing him to a myriad of ways to get involved and continue to work with communities to achieve common goals. By watching them and participating in many of the programs they created, he developed a passion for community work and preventive care. In his youth, he came to realize that for him, sports created that sense of community and became a tool that he was able to leverage to create friendships, grow confidence, and build overall skills that crossed over into many facets of life.

Once on his journey to become a doctor, Family Medicine was the logical specialty choice as it  would allow him to continue to build deep relationships within the communities he served. While in residency he realized that he could also combine his love of sports, so he chose to pursue a fellowship in Sports Medicine as well.

During his Fellowship, Dr. Carpio functioned as team doctor for a local high school and division 2 college. After training, he continued to invest his time in the local communities and over the course of 4 years he was directly involved in growing sports medicine for both clinical and community-based programs. He served as team doctor at 5 different high schools, providing sideline coverage and creating on campus training rooms to coordinate care for athletes on site, including medical care and sports physicals. He served as team doctor for an NAIA university and collaborated with local sports clubs to to coordinate care of all athletes out of his clinic. Additionally, he functioned as the Independent Neurological Consultant for the Los Angeles Chargers.

Dr. Carpio-Bracho is fluent in Spanish. When he is not at the office, he enjoys playing rugby, cheering on his beloved Detroit Lions, and spending time with family and friends.
